For People & Planet.
Transforming agriculture through industrial hemp.

What is Industrial Hemp (IH)?

Industrial hemp refers to a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant species that is specifically cultivated for industrial purposes. Unlike its close relative marijuana, industrial hemp contains minimal levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound responsible for the "high" associated with marijuana use. In most countries, including the United States, hemp is legally defined as having THC levels below 0.3%.

Industrial hemp has been cultivated for thousands of years and has a wide range of applications due to its versatility. It is primarily grown for its fibers and seeds, which can be utilized in various industries. Here are some common uses of industrial hemp:

Fiber production

Hemp fibers are strong and durable and can be used to make textiles, clothing, rope, canvas, and paper. Hemp fiber is known for its breathability, moisture-wicking properties, and resistance to mold and mildew.

Food and nutrition

Hemp seeds are highly nutritious and contain essential fatty acids, protein, vitamins, and minerals. They can be consumed as a whole seed or processed into hemp oil, protein powder, or milk substitutes.

Building materials

Hemp fibers can make construction materials such as hempcrete a sustainable alternative to traditional concrete. Hemp-based materials are lightweight, have excellent insulation properties, and are biodegradable.

Biofuels and bioplastics

Hemp seeds can be processed into hemp oil and used as a biofuel. Additionally, hemp fibers can be used to create biodegradable plastics and packaging materials, reducing the environmental impact of traditional plastics.

Due to its versatility, sustainability, and potential economic benefits, industrial hemp is gaining increasing attention worldwide. Its cultivation and use are subject to specific regulations and vary by country or jurisdiction.
